The Centraal Museum is the city museum of Utrecht, the Netherlands, which houses an important collection of pre-1850s art, modern art, applied arts, fashion and city history.
The Centraal Museum is the city museum of Utrecht, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1838. Initially, the collection - displayed on the top floor of Utrecht's town hall - was limited to art related to the city of Utrecht. In 1921 that collection was merged with various private collections into a new central museum in the former medieval monastery of Nicolaaskerkhof (hence the name “Centraal Museum”, “centraal” being Dutch for “centre”).
The museum houses an important collection of pre-1850s art, modern art, applied arts, design, fashion and city history and offers an exhibition programme and collection exhibition that sparks and exchanges perspectives.
Part of the museum itself is the Rietveld Schröder House, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
