ART BY BILLIE-JO | FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY | PART OF ECHO.UNIFIED
Billie-Jo Krul is a Dutch-Canadian photographer who began her artistic practice after studying Art History in Utrecht and gaining years of experience in the art world, after which she decided to focus on photography.
In her fine art photography, Billie-Jo translates her personal experiences and emotions into images in her own unique way, as can be seen in her most recent series, Broad Daylight, which will also be on display during GLUE Utrecht in the exhibition ECHO.UNIFIED. Within ECHO - FROM RESIDUE T O FORM, her work resonates with the material context: Nedal's production of lightning columns connects directly to her work, while the images are mounted on aluminium, extending the dialogue between material and meaning.
This photo series originated after a dark period of mourning, when she saw her feelings reflected in the appearance and setting of a lamppost in daylight; as a personification of an emotion. Moved by the sight, she turned her camera on the diverse shapes and appearances of streetlights in daylight. Billie-Jo portrays them, and through the intuitive use of color and composition, she transforms these everyday objects in the streetscape into universal metaphors for themes such as grief, solace, resilience, and zest for life.
In addition to her autonomous work, Billie-Jo creates portraits and works on commission for museums, institutions, magazines, and cultural organizations, using her photography to visually enhance projects and stories. Her work is often colorful, bright, and minimalist in nature, with a strong narrative quality. Her images have been featured in publications, and she exhibits regularly in galleries and art spaces, earning her recognition such as the European Merit Award in the Illustration & Fine Art category at the FEP Awards 2025 of The Federation of European Professional Photographers and the Portrait Photography Award from PhotoChronicles in 2019.
